ACNewmanGetGuiltyNote: Get Guilty is the second solo album from The New Pornographers frontman Carl Newman.
Sound: Bouncy indie pop with a stately elegance and an odd ability to be catchy and intangible simultaneously. Newman’s pretty melodies are frequently joined by spirited harmonies from singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins and Mates of States’ Kori Gardner – continuing his long-standing tradition of creating infectious boy/girl sing-along tunes. And musically, piano and acoustic guitar drive many of the songs, while strings, brass and woodwinds create subtly lush background textures.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “The Changeling (Get Guilty)”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Like A Hitman, Like A Dancer” “There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve”; “The Collected Works”; “The Palace at 4am”; “Prophets”
Recommended: As the brains behind The New Pornographers, Carl’s crafted some of the finest pop songs and albums of the decade. So he’s set the bar pretty high for himself. Get Guilty doesn’t quite live up to the lofty standard of Electric Version (my #2 Album of 2003), Mass Romantic (my #12 Album of 2000) or even Twin Cinema (my #21 Album of 2005). But it is on par with the last New Pornographers album, Challengers, and his 2004 solo debut, The Slow Wonder, and what it lacks in standout classic singles it makes up for in charm and consistency.
Grade: B+
