SYNDICATE

LateofthePierFantasySound: An ambitious hybrid of electro pop and dance punk. The synths can be fluid and orchestrated or grinding and psychotic while the guitars can be fuzzy and riff-heavy or choppy and bouncy. And the vocals match the late ’70s/early ’80s British new wave vibe with some glammy falsetto and several grand, anthemic hooks.
Heavy Rotation track: “Broken”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Space & The Woods”; “Bathroom Gurgle”; “Focker”; “The Bears Are Coming”
Recommended: Fantasy Black Channel is dense – thick layers of sound, several genres thrown into a blender and spit out into manageable pop-ish songs – and it takes several listens to process what’s actually happening. If you put in the time, you’ll discover Late of the Pier has an inspired and relatively fresh take on what bands like The Faint, Shy Child, Bloc Party, The Klaxons, Hot Chip and more have done this decade. But some of the time, the music feels like an unnecessary rehash of the work of artists like Gary Numan, Ultravox and New Order from 15-20 years ago.
