SYNDICATE

LilWayneCarter3Sound: A hodgepodge of hip hop styles – from smooth, sexy and r&b-flavored to spare, bombastic and street-ready to slick, synthy and radio-friendly. Plus, there’s room for some dark soul, nimble jazz, ominous gangsta rap and quirky, oddball beats, as well. A variety of guest crooners (inlcluding Babyface, Robin Thicke, T-Pain and Bobby Valentino) lend hooks and MCs (including Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and Fabolous) lend verses, but the quality star power never diverts the spotlight from Lil Wayne for too long. His Cajun hood rasp is as versatile as ever as he alternates between laid back and fiery; pensive and swaggering; tortured and playful. He let’s a vocoder digitally distort his rhymes from time to time and takes on the persona of both a freakish alien and an overworked doctor.
Look For: The album’s final track “DontGetIt” features a sample of Nina Simone’s version of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and a spoken word indictment of Rev. Al Sharpton.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Mrs. Officer” featuring Bobby Valentino; “La La” featuring Brisco and Busta Rhymes; “Dr. Carter”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Tie My Hands” featuring Robin Thicke”; “DontGetIt”; “Phone Home”; “Let the Beat Build”
Recommended: Tha Carter III is awfully disjointed, but there’s something for every hip hop/r&b fan on here – whether you like pop hits, rugged rhymes, insightful reflections or offbeat experimentation. Lil Wayne maintains his spot as one of the most intriguing and capable rappers out there.
