NINTheSlipSmallNote: The Slip is currently only available as a free download on nin.com. And in an unprecedented move, Trent Reznor has also made the album liner notes and artwork available as a downloadable PDF. So with a color printer, a blank jewel case, a CD burner and a little extra effort, you can create a physical copy of NIN’s latest – seemingly making it unnecessary to ever have to buy The Slip. But according to nin.com, the album will get a traditional CD and vinyl release in July. It will be interesting to see if those versions have any enticing added value.
Sound: Stomping, aggressive, distorted guitar rockers; Mid-tempo, riff-driven, electro grooves; Brooding, atmospheric instrumentals and a prerequisite, eerie piano ballad that barely rises above a whisper.
Heavy Rotation tracks: none
Medium Rotation tracks: “The Four Of Us Are Dying”; “Discipline”
Recommended: There’s very little on here you haven’t heard before from NIN. And in the past, the execution and end result was significantly better. Trent Reznor will keep his name out there with his latest plan to join artists like Radiohead and The Raconteurs in upending the music industry, but he should have spent a lot more time in the studio before releasing The Slip. It’s a far cry from his previous releases – 2007’s Year Zero and 2005’s With Teeth.
Grade: C+
