SYNDICATE

TheRootsRisingDownSound: The world’s premiere hip hop band jumps around from militant synth funk to smooth jazzy fusion to brooding r&b and even drops an electro industrial beat that could be on a Nine Inch Nails album. Meanwhile lead MC Black Thought spits fiery, socially conscious rhymes and frequently passes the mic to an equally hungry, agitated and skillful group of guest rappers.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “I Will Not Apologize” featuring Porn and Dice Raw; “Get Busy” featuring Dice Raw & Peedi Peedi; “Rising Down” featuring Mos Def & Styles P
Medium Rotation tracks: “I Can’t Help It” featuring Malik B, Porn, Mercedes Martinez & Dice Raw; “Lost Desire” featuring Malik B & Talib Kweli
Recommended: Like their last album Game Theory, Rising Down features far more guest MCs than the average Roots album. But unlike many hip hop albums where marquee names often phone in disconnected performances, the mostly under-the-radar group of rhymespitters on here deliver vital verses that expand the vocabulary and sonic palette. And as a band, The Roots keep finding satisfying new sounds and grooves. This is another quality offering from the hip hop veterans.
