ManManRabbitHabitsSound: Avant-garde rock in the spirit of Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart. Raspy growls, urgent yelps, beer-soaked sing-alongs and falsetto choruses meet up with a zany mix of carnival-esque, cartoon-like and barroom-flavored romps, along with a wicked waltz and sobering ballad. They throw in a wide array of instruments – several different organs, piano, brass, woodwinds, xylophone, strings – but they never feel indulgent or overbearing.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Big Trouble”; “Top Drawer”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Mister Jung Stuffed”; “Hurly/Burly”; “The Ballad of Butter Bean”
Recommended: Man Man sound more modern and accessible than they did on Six Demon Bag (my #15 Album of 2006), which makes Rabbit Habbits an easier listen. But by reining in some of their experimental tendencies, they’ve become a little less dangerous and unpredictable, which was part of their charm. Regardless, this leaner and more transparent version of Man Man still makes some of the most exhilarating and colorful music out there today.
