SYNDICATE

StephenMalkmusRealEmotionalSound: As always, Stephen Malkmus takes an unlikely hodgepodge of elements (like doomsday metal riffs colliding with quirky falsetto indie pop or breezy California meditations becoming fuzzed-out jams) and blends them into cohesive, oddball songs. On his fourth post-Pavement album, he returns to more of the proggy, psychedelic, extended guitar jam virtuosity he explored on his second post-Pavement album, Pig Lib. So if you’re keeping score, his first and third solo albums (credited to Stephen Malkmus) contained reined-in but boundary-pushing indie rock gems, while his second and fourth solo albums (credited to Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks) tend towards the lengthier and sometimes meandering epics.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Gardenia”; “Baltimore”; “Dragonfly Pie”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Out of Reaches”
Recommended: Malkmus comes through once again with some mindboggling, innovative and catchy creations. But he also gets indulgent and allows tracks to spread out and overstay their welcome. Hop aboard for another round of fascinating and bizarre lyrical wordplay and guitar wizardry, just beware that the ride can get a little murky and unfocused at times. Real Emotional Trash is a few levels below his last album – the masterpiece Face the Truth (my #1 album of 2005), but has several worthwhile highlights.
Grade: B+
