SYNDICATE

MGMT OracularNotes: The band’s name is pronounced “M-G-M-T,” and this debut album was produced by Dave Fridmann, who’s known best for his work with The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.
Sound: A charismatic and densely layered, electronic indie pop/rock explosion. Synths shimmer, quiver, swirl and grind, while vocals shoot up into falsetto territory, harmonize and echo. Whether dreamy, glammy, funky, clubby or a mixture of all the above, most of the tracks on here are quite hooky and immediate, despite the complex mélange of sounds floating around.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Weekend Wars”; “Electric Feel”; “Time To Pretend”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Kids”; “Pieces of What”
Recommended: If you’re a fan of Dave Fridmann’s kitchen-sink, trippy production, you’ll find plenty to like on Oracular Spectacular – as will fans of androgynous folky rock (think David Bowie) and the kind of pop that soars into the atmosphere but lodges into your head (think Air, The Bee Gees, Mates of State, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev).
Grade: B+
