DuranDuranRedCarpetNote: A few of the tracks on here were co-written or co-produced by either Timbaland or Justin Timberlake. Duran Duran have unabashedly admitted they teamed up with two of today’s biggest hitmakers because they wanted to have Top 40 success in the U.S.
Sound: A mix of arena-sized electronic rock, funky digital pop and somber reflections. Regardless of the mood, the rhythm always pulses and drives the songs forward, nothing lingers too long. Though there are occasional harmonies, atmospheric choirs and a quintessential Timbaland guest spot, Simon LeBon’s iconic, romantic croon is front and center and alluring as ever.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Dirty Great Monster”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Tempted”; “She’s Too Much”; “Falling Down”; “Nite-Runner”
Recommended: The pairing of a group of pop legends with two of today’s biggest pop superstars (and a few other current hot producers) makes for some truly inpsired and modern sounds. This is the strongest Duran Duran album since their early ‘80s heyday. But the achievements in production are often undermined by lackluster lyrics and Red Carpet Massacre is short on bonafide hits. The mellower songs are strongest, in general, and the second half is better than the first.
Grade: B+
