SYNDICATE

AliciaKeysAsIAmSound: Alicia takes her piano skills and strong soulful voice and pushes her music in a surprisingly pop direction. There’s no less conviction in her delivery as she belts out the powerful parts and she’s as sensual as ever on the whispery, more sedated sections. But there’s a polish and focus on catchy melodies here that’s particularly more refined, easier on the ears and more retro-sounding than her previous work. Much of the more modern hip hop and r&b tendencies (electronics, samples) have been dropped in favor of classic, full-band arrangements.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Superwoman”; “Teenage Love Affair”; “Wreckless Love”
Mediuim Rotation tracks: “No One”; “Sure Looks Good To Me”; “I Need You”; “Like You’ll Never See Me Again”; “Tell You Something (Nana’s Reprise)”
Recommended: The abundance of expert performances and finely crafted hooks make As I Am a highly memorable and satisfying listen. However, it also feels very safe and clichéd. Many of the lyrics feel oversimplified or borrowed from the past and the poppier, revivalist sounds are a little confusing for an established contemporary soul/r&b artist.
