Note: Places is the debut album from Georgie James, a duo consisting of multi-instrumentalist/ singer/songwriter John Davis (former drummer of the defunct D.C. danceable punk/hardcore band Q and Not U) and organist/pianist/ vocalist/songwriter Laura Burhenn.
Sound: Whether channeling the sprightly, riff-and-rhythm-heavy post-punk of The Jam, the bouncy piano pop of Paul McCartney/Wings or the acoustic strumming grooves of Simon and Garfunkel, Georgie James specialize in layers of co-ed harmonies, easy-on-the-ears melodies, confident beats and production with enough grit to keep indie-minded rockers happy. They have a classic sound that transcends time and keeps you singing along effortlessly.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Look Me Up”; “Long Week”
Medium Rotation tracks: “More Lights”; “Need Your Needs”; “Places”; “Cake Parade”; “Hard Feelings”
Recommended: Despite their clear influences from decades ago, Georgie James sounds like a modern band. Fans of New Pornographers, Imperial Teen and latter day Superchunk should find plenty to like on Places.
