CollieBuddzSound: A forward-thinking, urban-oriented and mostly- American-friendly mix of reggae, dancehall, hip hop and r&b/pop.
Note: Collie Buddz (aka Colin Harper) was born in New Orleans, raised in Bermuda and lived in Toronto from time to time.
Lyrics: When he’s not championing weed, propositioning the ladies and getting the dance party started, he takes some time out to reflect on loss and hardship and encourages those in the struggle to keep fighting.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Come Around”; “Blind To You”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Defend Your Own” featuring Krayzie Bone; “Mamacita”
Recommended: The album starts off with the genre-blending boldness of Damian Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock (my #9 album of 2005), a landmark crossover statement for modern Caribbean music. After track 3, the excitement dies down a little and occasionally ventures into some iffy US Top 40 Radio territory. But for the most part Collie Buddz is a strong introduction to a hard-to-classify, multi-faceted talent.
Grade: B+
