Note: After two albums on Matador Records, this is Interpol’s major-label debut.
Sound: Dissonant and atmospheric rock that bounces between gloomy and forlorn, and hard-driving and hooky. It’s a mix of their more ambient debut Turn On the Bright Lights and their more pop-friendly follow-up Antics.
Heavy Rotation track: “Pioneer to the Falls”
Medium Rotation tracks: “The Heinrich Maneuver”; “Mammoth”; “Rest My Chemistry”; “Who Do You Think?”
Recommended: Interpol set a lofty standard with their first two albums. Our Love to Admire doesn’t live up to that standard. The highlights are not as high, some tracks feel like inferior versions of old songs and there are a couple aimless snoozes. However, they do introduce a couple new and hypnotically gripping soundscapes and open up with a creepy anthem for the ages, “Pioneer of the Falls.” Though not their best work, fans of dour music with memorable lines will fine plenty to like on here.
