JoanAsPoliceWomanRealLifeNote: Joan As Police Woman is a band outlet for Joan Wasser’s singing/songwriting. She’s a veteran musician who’s played violin on many albums over the last 15 years, from artists like Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright and Sheryl Crow to Sparklehorse, The Grifters and Elysian Fields…and many more.
Also Note: Joan was dating Jeff Buckley at the time of his death in 1997.
One More Note: Real Life was released in the UK in the summer of 2006, but not until June 2007 in the U.S.
Sound: Contemplative, raspy and soulful vocals, with quiet but powerful combinations of piano, organ, strings, horns, guitar and percussion.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “I Defy” featuring Antony Hegarty; “Save Me”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Eternal Flame”; “We Don’t Own It”; “Christobel”; “Anyone”
Recommended: If you like the reserved forcefulness of Cat Power’s music but feel it can get too dreary and laborious. There’s hope and beauty in these classic-minded melodies and expertly crafted arrangements. The second half of the album is actually better than the first.
