NationalBoxerSound: Somber and brooding indie rock that never gets caught up in its darkness thanks to rich textures (piano, strings and brass come and go at opportune times), pumping rhythms (the drums can stomp out militant beats, even in relatively reserved tracks) and gripping imagery (words and phrases have a tendency to repeat and lodge themselves in your brain).
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Mistaken For Strangers”; “Start A War”; “Apartment Story”
Medium Rotation tracks: The rest
Recommended: The National’s music is always a slow burn, but after a few listens the quiet brilliance seizes you. The highlights on their last album, 2005’s Alligator were a little stronger, but Boxer is far more consistent from start to finish.
Grade: A- (Top 20 Albums of 2007 Candidate)
