MyChemRomanceParade Note: The Black Parade is a concept album that tells the story of a young, dying, cancer patient reflecting on his life. It was produced by Rob Cavallo (who also produced Green Day’s American Idiot) and both albums have a similar grandiose, rock opera feel.
Sound: Death-fixated, arena-sized anthems with a flair for the theatrical and melodramatic. Much of the raw, on-the-verge-of-collapse frenzy of the excellent Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (my #3 album of 2004), is tempered by a slicker, more ornate sound reminiscent of Queen and more suited for commercial radio.
Heavy Rotation tracks:Mama”; “House of Wolves”; “This Is How I Disappear”; “The Sharpest Lives
Medium Rotation tracks:Dead!”; “Teenagers”; “Disenchanted
Explicit Lyrics*: “Mama,” “Teenagers,” “Disenchanted”
Recommended: My Chemical Romance’s desire to broaden their horizons is admirable, but sometimes The Black Parade feels overblown and schizophrenic. Bouncing back and forth between aggressive ragers and sentimental power ballads gets confusing after awhile. Plus, the element of danger racing through their previous work is often lost in the polished perfection. Still, their newly refined sound, with all its audacity, creativity and knack for monster hooks is more exciting than the large majority of today’s cookie-cutter, mainstream rock.
Grade: B+

  1. Steve Says:

Their performance on this past SNL was abysmal.

  2. Dave Says:

Sadly, they are better in the studio than they are live.

And unfortunately, they played two of the weaker tracks on the album. Before you write them off, you might check out some of the suggested tracks.
