Note: This is their fifth album and their first since 2001’s Party Music (which originally featured the unfortunately-timed album art depicting them blowing up the World Trade Center (an anti-capitalist statement)…the album wasn’t officially released before 9/11 and the cover was quickly changed before its release. The incident was naturally controversial and attracted a lot of press.)
Sound: Politically, economically and socially conscious hip-hop with Funkadelic basslines, synths and guitars, sexily soulful jams and a steady dose of comedy to lighten the mood.
Look For: Conspiracy theories (“Bush and Hussein together in bed, giving h-e-a-d head” – on “Head (Of State)”), a prescription for oppression (“Ass-Breath Killers,” a pill that prevents you from kissing the boss/authority’s ass), foreplay with a message (“BabyLet’sHaveABabyBeforeBushDoSomethingCrazy”) and much more.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Head (Of State)“; “We Are the Ones
“; “I Love Boosters!
“; “MindFuck (A New Equation)
“; “Ass-Breath Killers
“
Medium Rotation tracks: The rest
Recommended: If you love the musical creativity and eclecticism of Outkast and wouldn’t mind a bunch of hilarious, anti-establishment commentary thrown into the mix.
