SYNDICATE

In the world of Man Man, the men can sound like drunken barbarians…and they can sound like women. Throaty growls reminiscent of Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart are the vocal of choice and are often chanted as a group, then tempered by male-sounding-female falsetto responses. The musical backdrop for this hedonistic behavior often feels centuries old with its Pleasure Forever-esque, doomsday-piano-driven waltzes, Firewater-esque, alcohol-soaked klezmer romps and period-sounding violin, accordion, clarinet, flute and trumpet. However, Man Man do blow their cover as contemporary musicians by occasionally using avant-garde electronic noises and fuzzed out organs, along with a surprising 50’s doo wop cameo in the final track “Ice Dogsicon.” Make no mistake, this is wacky stuff that’s unlikely to appeal to a wide audience. But the decadent, danceable rhythms and revamping of ancient-but-familiar styles are sure to grab your attention. If you stick with it through a few a listens, you’ll continue uncovering the impressive layers of innovation contained in Man Man’s Six Demon Bag.
