SYNDICATE

CakeEvenBetterIt’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Cake. The genre-blending, indie-minded rockers formed in 1991 in Sacramento, California and have released five studio albums. The most recent of them was 2004’s Pressure Chief. After a two-year world tour supporting the record, they decided to leave major label Columbia Records on their own accord and form their own label, Upbeat Records.

In the next year, the band plans to put out three Cake releases via their new autonomous launching pad. First up is B-Sides and Rarities, which is available for pre-order now via their website, cakemusic.com (audio samples included). On there you’ll find some Cake originals and several covers, including Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” which can you download for free here:

Next up for Upbeat Records will be the release of Cake Live at Crystal Palace, which is slated to be available this fall. Plus, the band is currently working on their sixth studio album and hopes to have it ready by first quarter 2008.

Cake’s sound has always been a fascinating mix of styles, including funk, rap, rock, soul, country and Latin, but it hasn’t evolved much over the years…not that the consistency was ever a problem. It will be interesting, though, to see if their new found creative freedom brings about unexpected sounds.
