SYNDICATE

FlamingLipsAccording to NewsOK.com, Oklahoma City officials are planning to honor The Flaming Lips. Their hometown’s city council wants to call a currently unnamed alley Flaming Lips Alley. The stretch of pavement lies in the Bricktown area and has been described as “littered with open dumpsters” and “poorly lit at night.”

Though the tribute sounds a bit like a backhanded compliment, Lips’ management says the band is “very excited and very honored,” according to mtv.com. Perhaps they feel, the dirty, off-the-beaten-path alley is an appropriate destination for a band who spent years as an underground, experimental, noise-rock band.

But the fact is, they rose to critical prominence with a more polished, electronic/orchestral sound that’s boldly ambitious and revered by audiophiles. I think the street that bears their name should be more prominent and tidy. One city official quoted on NewsOK.com says he think the “name change might inspire a clean-up and development along the alley.” I hope he’s right. A rags-to-riches transformation like that would be a fitting story arc and tribute to the Lips.
