MyChemRomanceParade My Chemical Romance’s new album, The Black Parade, hits stores this Tuesday, October 24th, but you can hear the album streaming online right now at theblackparade.com.

After a casual listen, I’m skeptical whether this one’s gonna stack up to Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (my #3 Album of 2004). #3, you say? That band with that whiny and annoying song “Helena?” Well, long before that unfortunate single became ubiquitous and made My Chemcial Romance a household name, it was the ill-advised opening track on an otherwise stellar album. So if you were turned off by “Helena,” you should really listen to more My Chemical Romance…if you like your music dark, aggressive and melodic.

As for The Black Parade, my initial concern is that it’s too slick and an odd balance of grandiose/arty and angsty/radio-ready. I also hear some promising, intense songs, too. It’s much too soon to pass judgment without a couple more listens.

I’m definitely pulling for them, though. I shot a segment with bandmembers Gerard, Mikey and Ray last year for MTV2’s now-defunct show Playlistism. We spent a couple hours in Ray’s bedroom and on their tourbus talking about music. They were three of the nicest, most interesting and down to earth guys I’d met in the business. Plus, we had very similar musical taste. I wish them the best of luck with The Black Parade.
