LEMURIA/KIND OF LIKE SPITTING Your Living Room’s All Over Me Art of the Underground

LemuriaSpiitingA split EP between Buffalo, NY’s Lemuria and Portland, OR’s Kind of Like Spitting. The record starts with Lemuria’s catchy brand of female fronted poppish punk. Reminiscent of a Pretty Girls Make Graves with a bit of a more Jawbreaker-esque vibe, the dual male/female vocals add a nice touch, though the flow of the songs is slightly lost occasionally. While their half of the record leaves something to be desired, Lemuria’s seven songs provide a nice intro for the more abrasive songs of Kind of Like Spitting. Their five songs start off with the dissonant guitars and rolling bass of “Shallow Doses”. Immediately it is apparent that KOLS have returned to the louder full band style of 2002’s Bridges Worth Burning. Through the rest of the record, singer Ben Barnett carries most of the vocals on his signature yelp rather than the somewhat off key, though still charming, singing used on his more acoustic based records. As an added bonus for any Barnett fanatic, the record features a song he wrote during his stint in The Thermals, and while certainly sounding reminiscent of The Thermals, it still has that KOLS feel to it.
