Sound: High energy and highly melodic British-sounding punky/poppy rock from a French quintet. Synths and organs grind, bounce or creep and guitars jangle, jump or swirl, and there’s a good balance between amped up and sedated, and dark and bright.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Moloko Sound Club”; “Broken Matador”; “You’re Gonna Say Yeah!”
Medium Rotation tracks: “A Trip To Vienna”; “Hot Shot”; “Harmonium”; “Lost Organ”
Recommended: Most of the sounds on Silence Is Golden are familiar. Many post-punkers from the late ‘70s or this decade have conjured them before. But Hushpuppies do bring some freshness and excitement to a saturated genre. Perhaps it’s their French perspective – or their je ne sais quoi – that helps this collection of songs stand out from the herd. The prominent use of keyboard instruments also helps. The first few and the last few tracks are the standouts, while the middle of the album experiences a slight letdown.
