Sound: An adventurous mix of electro funk, throwback hip hop, smooth r&b and spacey rock with a few jungle rhythms, jazzy horns and fuzzy riffs thrown in. As one of the premier production duos in popular music this decade, The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) make beats and hooks for the masses, but with their band outlet N.E.R.D., they conjure up a much more challenging sound.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Everyone Nose”; “Windows”; “Anti Matter”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Intro/Time For Some Action”; “Sooner or Later”; “Kill Joy”
Recommended: The first half of Seeing Sounds is a bold and invigorating collision of musical styles with one strong track after another. The second half is nearly as daring, but not nearly as effective as it limps to the finish. N.E.R.D.’s music is great for anyone who appreciates fearless experimentation.
Grade: B+ (1st half = A; 2nd half = B-)
