Sound: Atmospheric, fuzzy rock that alternates between hazy and woozy, riffy and anthemic, and bouncy and jangly. The lead vocals jump back and forth between Holly Miranda and Josh Abbott, who often harmonize or duel with each other.
Playlist Partners: Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead, Morcheeba, Cat Power
Heavy Rotation tracks: none
Medium Rotation tracks: “How Now”; “Organs on the Kitchen Floor”; “Secret Identity”; “Carry Me”; “I Quit”
Recommended: This self-titled release showcases a variety of tried and true indie sounds and competently pulls off each stylistic detour. But the album’s diversity causes somewhat of an identity crisis. It’s hard to say who The Jealous Girlfriends are, and they’re short on standout tracks. But each individual track and/or the album as a whole make for an enjoyable listen.
