Sound: A mix of jangly roots rock, breezy alt country and bouncy indie pop driven by a tuneful and achy twang. Funky horns, peppy piano and an occasional banjo, pedal steel or organ spice up the festivities. You can hear obvious similarities to Wilco, Tom Petty, The Glands (an under-the-radar late ‘90s/early ‘00s Athens, GA band), The Jayhawks and The Black Crowes.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “I Can’t Be What You Want”; “NYC Nervous Breakdown”; “LA, or Babette Sange”
Medium Rotation tracks: “St. Sebastian”; “Streets Alone”
Recommended: If you like the artists mentioned above, you’ll find plenty to embrace on the first half of Hymns. But the second half is pretty forgettable.
Grade: B (1st Half = A-; 2nd Half = C+)
