Sound: Dancefloor-friendly, early-80s-inspired synth pop and new wave with vocals that bounce between glammy falsetto crooning, blasé hipster talk/singing and robotic sound manipulating. There are a few moments that scream LCD Soundsystem on I Created Disco, but the tracks are generally shorter and more mainstream-friendly, retro-minded and British (Calvin’s from Dumfries, Scotland).
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Colours”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Merry Making At My Place”; “This Is Industry”; “The Girls”; “Acceptable in the 80s”
Recommended: All the hits are frontloaded and provide non-stop fun on the first five tracks. But the second half gets much less lyrical and frequently goes instrumental. The clubgoers may remain engaged as the album progresses, but most others will likely start losing interest.
Grade: B (1st Half = A-; 2nd Half = B-)
