Sound: Semi-symphonic, indie pop/rock marked by exuberant four-part harmonies that sound like they’re sung by a choir, instead of two girls and two guys. With the help of some auxiliary musicians, this fervent foursome creates epic and theatrical journeys full of strings, horns, organs and pianos. Their infectious enthusiasm falls somewhere between Mates of State’s lo-fi version and The Polyphonic Spree’s grandiose setup, while they occasionally conjure up the dramatic tension of Arcade Fire and the hippie-like idealism of many late ‘60s bands.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Our Friends Appear Like the Dawn”; “It Is Familiar”
Medium Rotation tracks: “I Heard It Sound”; “These Are the Eyes”
Recommended: The vastness of the sound created by Bodies of Water is highly impressive for a band this underground. When the voices, instruments and hooks align perfectly, they can transcend this earth with spiritual explosiveness. Throughout the course of this near-60-minute album, though, all the excitement can get a little overwhelming. Plus, there are several sections that drag down the momentum.
