Sound: Downtown, chic indie rock with a poppy bounce that draws from both late 70s post-punk and Motown. Minimalist repetition and staccato piano/guitar lead the way, as usual, while Spoon throw in a couple surprises with echo-laden atmosphere, distorted electronics and sing-songy horns.
Heavy Rotation track: “The Underdog”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Finer Feelings”; “Rhthm & Soul”
Recommended: Mike McCarthy has produced all of Spoon’s albums this decade, and it’s starting to feel like they’re in a rut. The most refreshing track on the album (“The Underdog”) is the only non-McCarthy production. Jon Brion (best known for his work with Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann and Kanye West) injects a new dimension into their sound with his rich, kitchen-sink approach. The vibe on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is consistently cool, but it also feels complacent. It lacks strong, inspired songs. Spoon should challenge themselves more and broaden their horizons in the future.
Grade: B-
