VelvetRevolverLibertadNote: This is the second album from the band featuring former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and ex-Guns ‘n’ Roses members Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), Matt Sorum (drums)
Sound: A satisfying marriage between Guns ‘n’ Roses (reckless riffs, rhythms and guitar solos) and Stone Temple Pilots (sunny, psychedelic and massive choruses that could comfortably echo throughout any rock-friendly arena). Velvet Revolver can drive this machine in several gears (including hum-along ballads) and offer up a variety of textures.
Heavy Rotation track: “She Mine”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Pills, Demons & Etc.”; “Spay”; “Let It Roll”; “For A Brother”
Recommended: Touring and time have really paid off for Velvet Revolver. They sound much more like a cohesive band than a supergroup that came together to jam (as they did on their debut album Contraband). The grooves are dirtier, more dangerous and more organic this time. Plus, the choruses are catchier. Yes, the best moments from their previous bands are far better than most of the material on Libertad, but this is a surprisingly good step in the right direction.
Grade: B+
