Sound: Cello-driven, avant-garde folk, pop and aggressive rock.
Vocals: With her powerful pipes, Melora Creager bounces between calm, enchanting storytelling and freaky, wicked howling.
Lyrics: Mostly inspired by and taken from news stories Melora read on the Internet. Topics include an Osama Bin Laden speech, hostilities in Fallujah and African children’s armies. She also conjures up historically-inspired anecdotes.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “In Old Yellowcake” (Top 20 Songs of 2007 Candidate); “Cage In A Cave”
Medium Rotation tracks: “1816, The Year Without a Summer”; “Choose Me for Champion”; “Draconian Crackdown”
Recommended: The highlights on Oh Perilous World are some of the most imaginative (both lyrically and musically) songs of the year. But most of the remaining tracks tend to get bogged down by the bizarre, arty ambition. Make sure you hear the heavy and medium rotation tracks. There’s nothing else like them out there these days.
