Sound: Airy and blasé vocals, scrappy and virtuosic indie rock guitar and a wide array of synthesized orchestrations. On her fourth post-Helium album, Mary’s added the word “band” to her moniker, signaling that her music sounds more collaborative, produced and Helium-esque than her previous three releases. She even conjures up some riffs reminiscent of her former band’s 1997 masterpiece The Magic City.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Pause/Off”; “Killed by the Telephone”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Summer’s Fawn”; “Sharpshooter”
Recommended: Mary takes you into an escapist world with cosmic noises, fantasy images and enchanting moods. The whole package isn’t quite as revolutionary or mesmerizing as it was on The Magic City, but it’s nearly as meticulously executed. This is her most complete album since the Helium days.
Grade: B+
