Note: This is The Veils’ second album, but the only remaining bandmember from their debut (2004’s The Runaway Found) is vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Finn Andrews (son of XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews).
Sound: British rock/pop that bounces between dirty and manic, bright and theatrical and mellow and sentimental. Piano twinkles, chimes and pounds, but the most potent weapon is Finn Andrews’ voice. He displays an astounding range that jumps from glammy and androgynous to crazed and convulsive to debonair and dramatic.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Not Yet” (Top 20 Songs of 2007 Candidate); “Advice for Young Mothers To Be”; “Nux Vomica”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Calliope!”; “Jesus For the Jugular”
Recommended: To fans of artists like Suede, The Divine Comedy, Pulp and The Smiths. There’s nothing on here that’s quite as perfect as the pop gem “The Tide That Left and Never Came Back” (my #4 song of 2004), but Nux Vomica is a more ferocious and accomplished album than The Runaway Found. Finn Andrews has established himself as a premier songwriter and performer.
Grade: A- (Top 20 Albums of 2007 Candidate)
