Sound: Smack-you-over-the-head riffs and basslines seize your attention and dare you to ignore Arctic Monkeys’ precise and pummeling Brit punk…which occasionally lets up on the adrenaline enough to make room for some lighter, Brit pop.
Lyrics: Thick in English accent, attitude and cleverness.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Teddy Picker”; “Brianstorm”; “D is for Dangerous”; “Flourescent Adolescent”
Medium Rotation tracks: “If You Were There, Beware”; “Old Yellow Bricks”; “Balaclava”
Recommended: Despite the enormous hype surrounding them over the last 18 months, Arctic Monkeys have avoided the sophomore slump. Their debut album tore through with more reckless abandon and consistency from start to finish. But Favourite Worst Nightmare has stronger and more striking highlights. This time around, you’re not thinking about how many old bands they’ve borrowed from. Instead, you’re impressed by how Arctic Monkeys are relentlessly claiming their own musical legacy.
Grade: A- (Top 20 Albums of 2007 Candidate)
