Note: Both a producer and an MC, Black Milk got his start as one half of the production duo BR Gunna, who contributed many tracks to fellow Detroit artist Slum Village’s Detroit Deli album.
Sound: Underground hip hop with sliced, diced and sped-up soul samples and feel-good beats you can nod your head to. The rhyme skills on display are impressive, whether it’s Black Milk or the host of guest Detroit MCs, and nobody disrupts the non-stop communal flow.
Heavy Rotation track: “Sound the Alarm” featuring Guilty Simpson
Medium Rotation tracks: “Three + Sum”; “Watch ‘Em” featuring Que Diesel and Fat Ray; “Insane”
Recommended: Black Milk and crew aren’t preachy and avoid silly gangsta/blingy posturing. If you like street level beats and rhymes delivered with a love of hip hop music, then Popular Demand will satisfy.
