Sound: Alice Smith’s sound is really hard to pin down. She has a full voice with a smoky and sexy rasp that you could call soulful, but the music jumps far beyond soul to include lots of pop elements, along with rock, jazz, funk, blues and musical theatre. However, the songs never fit neatly into any of those genres.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Woodstock”; “Fake is the New Real”; “Love Endeavor”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Dream”; “Gary Song”
Explicit Lyrics*: “Woodstock”; “Fake Is the New Real”
Recommended: The intangible, unclassifiable qualities of For Lovers, Dreamers and Me can be a little confounding, but you’ve got to respect an artist that can tackle so many styles and come up with something that sounds this fresh. Ultimately, the album is an easy listen due to the high level of musicianship, songwriting and production.
Grade: A-
