Note: This is the debut album from Heavens, a project featuring Alkaline Trio frontman Matt Skiba on vocals.
Sound: Skeletal and gloomy goth/punk with an elegant and sedated calm.
Lyrics: Death fascination; some gory, destructive and despondent imagery
Playlist Partners: Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division and The Cure…but it’s not quite as scary as that older music, because of the cleaner, modern production (some of that old goth stuff is awfully creepy…but great).
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Patent Pending”; “Gardens”
Medium Rotation tracks: “Counting”; “Watching You”; “Annabelle”
Recommended: Heavens isn’t as aggressive as Alkaline Trio, but Matt Skiba’s icy melodies translate well in this more relaxed setting. Also, fans of the classic work from the bands mentioned above should find this updated version satisfying…even soothing.
Grade: B+
