Note: Favourite Sons singer/songwriter Ken Griffin was the frontman of Rollerskate Skinny (Irish, ‘90s college radio buzz band).
Sound: Dark, underdog rock with lots of pep, hooks and classically dour romanticism reminiscent of Lou Reed, Jim Morrison, Ian McCulloch (Echo and the Bunnymen) and Julian Casablancas (The Strokes).
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Down Beside Your Beauty”; “When You're Away from Me”; “No One Ever Dies Young”
Medium Rotation tracks: The rest
Recommended: Favourite Sons owe a heavy debt to their influences, but the songs are great. Hit after hit, this is one of the most consistent albums of the year.
Grade: A-
