Sound: Jangly, spiky and speedy dual guitars meet a good ol’ rock and roll stomp with downtown sophistication. Yes, the Parisian four-piece has scrapped its chic, 80s synth pop in favor of a rawer, more straightforward sound reminiscent of The Strokes debut Is This It? (My #1 album of 2001), although Thomas Mars’ vocals are clearer and more energetic.
Heavy Rotation tracks: none
Medium Rotation tracks: “Sometimes In the Fall“; “Consolation Prizes
“; “Long Distance Call
“; “Second To None
”
Recommended: It’s Never Been Like That is just a fun rock album to listen to from start to finish. Unfortunately, few of the songs stick in your head when the music’s over.
Grade: B+
