Note: Gnarls Barkley is Cee-Lo (of Goodie Mob and solo fame) providing lyrics/vocals and Danger Mouse (producer of The Gray Album, Gorillaz Demon Days and Danger Doom The Mouse and the Mask) providing music/production.
Sound: 60s and 70s soul, r&b and Motown with an assaultive, chaotic and electronic update and a dark side.
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Crazy” (Top 20 Songs of 2006 Candidate); “Just a Thought
“
Medium Rotation tracks: “Boogie Monster“; “Go-Go Gadget Gospel
“; “St. Elsewhere
“
Also Look For: Their cover of the Violent Femmes classic “Gone Daddy Gone” a surprising and confusing choice.
Recommended: Occasionally it’s a striking collaboration between two of today’s most ambitious artists. More often, though, the sounds are more interesting than the songs.
Grade: B
