Vocals: Dueling Scottish accents from Adele Bethel (who has Shirley Manson of Garbage’s sultriness) and Scott Patterson (who has a darker brogue that alternates between Nick Cave’s
wickedness and Shane McGowan of the Pogues
drunkenness)
Music: Rhythm is at the forefront as they sinfully stomp and hoedown to handclap-laden, indie rock and country/folky punk
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Taste the Last Girl“; “Choked
“; “Monsters
“; “Rama Lama
”
Medium Rotation tracks: The rest
Recommended: As a fun, debauchery-fueled party album. Listen closer, however, and you’ll find that few of the songs feel fully realized and leave you wishing they developed their excellent sound and ideas further. Sons and Daughters are brimming with potential, and if they step up their songwriting a couple notches in the future, they’ll really be dangerous.
Grade: A- (Top 20 Albums of 2005 Candidate)
