Sound: Grand and sweeping, taught and explosive, sensitive and melodramatic – a cross sample of the same type of big-time rockers and power ballads the Foo Fighters have given us for years
Vocals: Dave Grohl’s growls and screams always find the melody and often give way to his softer, more accessible side
Heavy Rotation tracks: none
Medium Rotation tracks: “D.O.A.“; “In Your Honor
“; “The Last Song
“; “Best of You
“; “No Way Back
“
Recommended: There are no great Foo Fighters songs on here (there certainly have been several in the past) and there’s not much on here we haven’t heard from Dave Grohl and co. before, but it’s a classic-sounding rock album that’s a consistently good listen.
Grade: B+ (Slight chance of making my Top 20 Albums of 2005)
Note: For now, I’m only reviewing Disc 1. Disc 2 is all acoustic and essentially a Dave Grohl solo album. At this point, I’m not so sure that listening to a whole album of stripped-down Grohl is an enjoyable experience, but I’ll revisit it over the next few weeks.
