Sound: His post-Ben Folds Five sound has become increasingly rock-free
and adult singer-songwriter, but some of his wimpy, underdog power piano
pop and ballads are still so unique and sharp-witted that you can kinda forgive him for the sugary, light-FM stuff
Heavy Rotation tracks: “Bastard” (Top 20 Songs of the Year Candidate); “You to Thank
“; “Landed
“
Medium Rotation tracks: “Trusted“; “Sentimental Guy
“
Recommended: Unfortunately there’s no fuzzed-out bass and pounding
drums, but it’s still great to hear his piano virtuosity meet up with silly, simple
and inescapable lyrics. And if you’re into his sentimental side, you’ve got a lot
to look forward to here.
Grade: B+ (Slight chance of making my Top 20 Albums of 2005)
