Nearly a decade ago, The New Pornographers’ mastermind, A.C. Newman, found out he had a long-lost sister. That sister, it turns out, had two children, one of them a vocalist/pianist named Kathryn Calder. When primary New Pornographers’ female voice, Neko Case, was unable to tour with the band for some shows back in 2005, Kathryn filled in. She also performed on their album Twin Cinema.
As you might guess, Kathryn has her own band. The Victoria, British Columbia-based Immaculate Machine have an indie pop, male/female vocal sound that slightly resembles her uncle’s band’s harmonious perfection. They’ve actually been together since 2002 and released three CDs, but have remained under-the-radar.
Their profile is likely to change, however, with the release of Fables on June 12th. For the first time the band can boast having a member of The New Pornographers (who also happens to be A.C. Newman’s niece). Plus, the album features string arrangements from Arcade Fire’s Owen Pallett and backup vocals from Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos. You can bet we’ll be hearing more about Immaculate Machine this summer.
