On May 1st, the original Dinosuar Jr. lineup will release their first studio album in 19 years. The seminal noisy, guitar-heavy, indie rock/punk trio that consisted of guitar/vocalist J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph acrimoniously fell apart in 1989 after the release of 1988’s Bug. After that, of course, Dinosaur Jr. soldiered on with J. Mascis and a rotating cast of musicians and Lou Barlow went on to form another seminal band, Sebadoh, and created several other projects including Folk Implosion and Sentridoh.
The Dinosaur Jr. reunion has actually been a reality since 2005. At the time, they played some gigs in support of the reissue of their first three albums. Surprisingly, everything went well. In fact, they ended up touring into 2006.
The real shocker, though, is that they all got along well enough to record a new album. And after a couple listens, I’d have to say that I’m pleasantly surprised by how tight and urgent it sounds. Beyond will be available on Tuesday, May 1st, but you can download or stream the opening track, “Almost Ready,” right now:
